December 16, 2020

What’s up with all this talk about generations? From the Boomers to Millennials and to the most recent to make headlines, Generation Z.

Why do generational divides matter?

Turns out, when it comes to understanding how and why we are the way we are, researching the generational divide unravels a plethora of mysteries!

While there are countless reasons to look at the data — from economic and financial perspectives to futuristic predictions — one of the most profound gains that has stemmed from researching the generations is the psychological effects of parenting.

And the power of parenting on the world at large is becoming incredibly evident in the relationship between Generation X and Generation Z.

Alright, let’s take a step back.

Who are Generation X and Generation Z?

Generation X was born between the 1960’s and late 1970’s. They’re generally characterized as direct, take criticism well, share a hybrid relationship with technology, and they are adept at collaboration. Generation X, while largely unsung, tends to be one of the most level-headed of the generations.

Generation Z — also called iGen or Centennials — are the kiddos born to Generation X.

This generation, born between 1996 and 2010 or 2015 depending, follows on the coattails of the infamous millennials. This unique group of youths are just beginning to be understood, yet they are recognized as one of the most pivotal generations for the future

And it’s easy to see why!

They’re financially forward, entrepreneurial, technologically super savvy, competitive and collaborative, independent, and open to change.

So, how did Generation X — the toughened, unsung generation — give rise to this group of forward thinking youths? More importantly, what can current parents take away from this parenting style?

While the quirks of their parenting style is yet to be determined by those high scientific powers, there’s a slow trickle of data showing a few characteristics that they’ve instilled in their kiddos! Specifically, generation X parents have “purposefully tried to raise a different kind of kid, influenced by their own upbringing.”

So, what did Generation X pass to Generation Z?

  • They value the importance of higher education
  • They’ve got tough skins
  • They are financially literate … even at a young age
  • They are less likely to drink heavily and take part in serious drugs
  • They’ve got a fierce entrepreneurial spirit

What does all this mean?

It comes down to is realistic parenting.

Generation X received parenting that taught them to be ready for the real world, without codling, and infused with fierce independence. It’s this same real world mentality that has born Generation Z who includes in its ranks fierce, driven, and world-changing individuals such as Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, Billie Eilish, Adut Akech, and Kylian Mbappe Lottin.
